Telematics Beyond Rating

Telematics in personal auto has crossed the chasm from early adopter program to standard offering at most major carriers. But data richness and data utilization are not the same thing.

The obvious application -- adjusting rates based on driving behavior -- is now table stakes. The carriers extracting outsized value from telematics are using the same data to improve claims, detect fraud, and create engagement touchpoints with policyholders between renewals.

Real-time crash detection integrated with FNOL workflows is one example. When telematics data triggers an alert at the moment of an accident, the carrier can initiate contact within minutes rather than waiting for the policyholder to call. That speed transforms the claims experience.

The fraud application is equally powerful. Telematics data can validate or contradict the circumstances of a reported loss in ways that would previously have required extensive investigation. That changes the economics of low-to-mid severity auto claims significantly.
