Straight-through processing in commercial lines is not a fantasy anymore. It is an early-stage reality.

Personal lines STP was enabled by data standardization, rule-based eligibility logic, and relatively homogeneous risk profiles. Commercial lines presents a fundamentally different challenge: more heterogeneous exposures, more complex coverage structures, and a greater role for human underwriting judgment on risks that legitimately require it.

But the gains are coming nonetheless. Small commercial markets are leading the way, with appetite-matching, real-time quoting, and bind capabilities for classes that are well-understood and well-documented. The technology is less novel than the discipline required to define clear rules for what can be handled straight-through and what must route to an underwriter.

The carriers building this capability are not eliminating underwriter judgment. They are protecting it by removing the routine submissions from underwriter queues so that human attention concentrates on the submissions where it genuinely creates value.
