Insurance AI has entered a new phase, and it is less forgiving than the experimental one.
When AI tools were living in sandboxes and proof-of-concept projects, the questions were mostly about capability. Can the model do what we think it can? The questions being asked in 2026 are harder: Can you explain why the model made this recommendation? How do you know the model is not producing systematically biased outcomes? What happens when the model is wrong?
Regulators in multiple states are developing AI governance frameworks specifically for insurance use cases. The NAIC model bulletin on AI use published in 2023 established principles that are now informing state-level requirements. Carriers deploying AI in underwriting, pricing, or claims are increasingly expected to demonstrate transparency and oversight in ways that require new governance structures.
The carriers that built responsible AI practices early, documentation of training data, model monitoring, explainability requirements, and human oversight protocols, are finding that compliance is easier and deployment credibility is higher. The ones that treated governance as a future problem are catching up under pressure.
AI governance is not a compliance tax on innovation. It is the foundation that makes sustainable AI deployment possible. Build it into the design, not the retrofit.
