Geospatial Property Underwriting

Property underwriting used to rely on a physical inspection that happened once at policy inception and then not again until a loss revealed something unexpected. Geospatial data is changing that fundamentally.

Satellite and aerial imagery updated regularly allows underwriters to detect roof condition changes, unpermitted structures, vegetation encroachment on commercial properties, and wildfire defensible space conditions without scheduling a physical visit. The frequency and coverage of that monitoring is something the industry has never had before.

Geospatial analytics platforms are now surfacing risk scores derived from imagery analysis directly into underwriting workbenches, enabling consistent application of property condition standards across a portfolio.

For flood, wildfire, and hail-prone properties specifically, the ability to monitor physical conditions and correlate them with loss history is producing underwriting models of substantially improved accuracy.
