Personal lines STP benefited from relatively standardized risk profiles and decades of clean historical data. Commercial lines present a harder problem: varied risk types, complex coverage structures, manuscript endorsements, and submission data that arrives in inconsistent formats from hundreds of distribution partners.
The carriers and MGAs investing in commercial STP are tackling this with a combination of structured data standards, AI-assisted submission normalization, and rules engines sophisticated enough to handle a meaningful percentage of routine commercial risks without underwriter intervention.
The efficiency gains are substantial for the risks that qualify. Faster turnaround improves hit ratios with brokers who reward responsive markets. And underwriters freed from routine renewal processing have more time for the complex, high-value risks that genuinely benefit from expert attention.
