Parametric Insurance Opportunity

Parametric insurance has moved from theoretical curiosity to proven product form -- and the expansion is accelerating.

The core appeal is speed: parametric policies pay when a defined trigger is met -- a wind speed threshold, rainfall level, or earthquake magnitude -- without requiring a traditional loss assessment. For certain perils and business contexts, that speed of payment is worth more than a perfectly calibrated indemnity.

Catastrophe and agricultural applications remain the most mature markets. But improved access to weather station data, satellite imagery, and IoT sensors is enabling parametric structures in new domains: business interruption, energy production shortfalls, and even supply chain disruption.

The barrier to broader adoption is basis risk -- the gap between the trigger event and actual loss. Customers who experience a significant loss that falls just below the trigger are understandably dissatisfied. Product design that minimizes basis risk, combined with transparent customer education, is essential for trust and retention.
