Telematics Signal Value

Telematics programs have produced enormous datasets. The question is whether they are producing better decisions.

Many carriers launched usage-based insurance programs primarily as a retention and acquisition tool -- discount in exchange for data. The actuarial integration often lagged the marketing launch by years. In those programs, the data is collected but not fully priced.

The mature UBI programs are the ones where behavioral data feeds directly into renewal pricing, claims severity prediction, and even driver coaching interventions that reduce loss before it occurs. That closed loop is where the real underwriting edge lives.

Getting there requires alignment between product, actuarial, and claims -- three functions that do not always speak the same language. The carriers who have invested in that cross-functional fluency are pulling ahead in loss ratio performance on UBI books.

Telematics Signal Value

Data collection without a decision architecture is an expensive hobby. The value of telematics lives in the actions the data enables, not the volume of observations stored.
