MGA Governance Questions

The managing general agent model has proven its value as a vehicle for specialized underwriting expertise and efficient market access. It's also created governance questions that the industry is still working through.

Capacity providers carry the ultimate risk, but often have less visibility into individual risk selection decisions than their aggregate exposure warrants. The quality of data sharing and reporting between MGA and carrier is the variable that most determines whether a program remains healthy over time.

Data ownership is a real issue. Who owns the risk data generated by an MGA program — and what happens to it if the capacity relationship changes — has become a material negotiation point as programs mature.

The MGAs and capacity providers that have invested in clear contractual frameworks, robust data sharing, and transparent performance reporting are building partnerships that outlast market cycles. The ones operating on ambiguity are accumulating relationship risk.

MGA Governance Questions

The MGA model works well when the alignment between capacity provider and program manager is clear and the data flows to support it. Building that alignment deliberately is worth the investment.
