The rarest skill in insurance right now is not data science. It is translation.
Most P&C organizations have accumulated substantial analytical capability. Actuarial models, machine learning tools, geospatial risk scoring, telematics platforms. The bottleneck is not producing the output. It is converting it into a decision that a business leader can act on with confidence.
The professionals who can sit between the model and the decision maker, who can explain what an algorithm is actually measuring, where its limitations are, and what human judgment should override it, are extraordinarily valuable. They prevent both over-reliance on models and reflexive dismissal of outputs that conflict with intuition.
If you have people with this skill in your organization, they are probably being underutilized. If you do not, building it should be on your talent agenda for 2026.
Technical complexity without translation capability is just expensive noise. Invest in the people who can convert analysis into action.
