Managing general agents are no longer disadvantaged by their size when it comes to technology -- in many cases, they are moving faster than the standard market carriers they work alongside.
Cloud-based policy administration, API-connected data providers, and low-code workflow automation have dramatically lowered the technology capital requirements for building a sophisticated MGA operation. Programs that once needed to negotiate access to carrier IT resources can now stand up their own infrastructure in weeks.
The strategic advantages compound: faster product launches, tighter control over data and analytics, and the ability to iterate on appetite and pricing without waiting for carrier system changes. That agility is attractive to both reinsurers and distribution partners.
The risk is that technology access alone does not create underwriting discipline. MGAs that invest in data and systems without investing equally in technical underwriting talent and governance frameworks are accumulating risk they may not fully see.
