Workers Comp RTW Analytics

In workers compensation, return-to-work outcomes are the single most powerful driver of total claim cost -- and analytics is finally giving adjusters the tools to influence those outcomes proactively.

Traditional RTW management relied heavily on adjuster experience and judgment applied at scheduled interval reviews. The problem is that intervention timing matters enormously: the factors driving delayed recovery -- physician communication gaps, modified duty availability, employee engagement -- are most addressable early in the claim lifecycle before patterns entrench.

Predictive models trained on claim characteristics, injury type, employer profile, and early claim milestones can flag files with elevated delayed-RTW probability within the first two weeks of a claim. That flag gives adjusters the trigger to initiate nurse case management, employer coordination, or vocational rehabilitation resources earlier than they would otherwise.

The carriers and TPAs deploying these tools effectively are seeing meaningful differences in average claim duration -- and therefore in total incurred costs -- on the files where early intervention is triggered.
