Insurance Promise Keepers

Insurance is an easy industry to criticize from the outside. Premium increases, coverage disputes, and complex claims processes make news in ways that the millions of claims paid fairly and promptly each year do not.

But the fundamental promise of insurance -- that when something goes wrong, help will come -- is one of the most important promises in a functioning economy. And the people who keep that promise every day are the claims adjusters, customer service representatives, underwriters, and operations professionals who show up and do the work.

On a day dedicated to gratitude, I am grateful for those professionals. The adjuster who drives four hours to a total loss and spends three hours with a family explaining their next steps. The underwriter who calls a broker back on a Friday afternoon to get a policy bound before a weekend closing. The IT team that fixes the system issue at midnight so Monday morning processes normally.

The industry deserves to tell its own story better. The people keeping the promise deserve recognition.
